Biography – Moritz Hamm
Moritz Hamm was born in 1991 in northern Germany and discovered his passion for the drums at the age of six. Initially self-taught on “pots and pans,” he began his musical journey. Growing up in a rural area, it was difficult for him as a student to find like-minded musicians. However, when a jazz band from Neumünster was looking for a drummer, Moritz joined and began playing jazz.
After finishing school, he completed a preparatory program for music studies in Berlin and continued his studies in 2013 at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre. There he was taught by renowned instructors such as Holger Nell and learned from leading figures including Mark Nauseef, Marcio Doctor, John Riley, and many others.
Moritz Hamm has become a sought-after sideman in Hamburg and has played in many different bands. He also initiated his own projects and organized concert series such as Frischetheke in Stade, Jazzkitchen in Hamburg, and the TV program JazzTied on Tide TV. Moritz has collaborated with numerous musicians, including Hans Glawischnig, Martin Wind, Giovanni Weiss, Jerry Bergonzi, Buggy Braune, Frank Delle, Julie Silvera, Lutz Krajenski, Sandra Hempel, the NDR Bigband, Nils Landgren, Schott Robinson, and many others.
In addition to his live performances, Moritz can be heard on several albums, including Daniel Hirth’s Auf ein Wort (2020), Clémence Manachère’s Unterwasser (2019) and Explosante (2022), as well as Julie Silvera’s About Time (2022) and the collaborative trio Trioladen (2021). In 2023, he released his first album under his own name, Erwachen, in which he was significantly involved not only as a musician but also as a producer and composer. Further releases include Pudeldame’s Come On Humanity (2023) and Kein schlechtes Wetter (2025). In addition, Moritz can be heard on several film soundtracks. In 2025, Moritz moved from Hamburg to Berlin.
